Grand re-opening a success!

150 hot dogs 5 gallons of lemonade 5 gallons of ice tea. Somebody had
a good time!

The weather was in complete cooperation and we had a great turnout for
the re opening of Weccacoe playground.  In addition to hot dogs and
lemonade food contributions from QVNA Board members and from local
restaurant Plenty, we’re also devoured. Thank you very much for a
great evening.

Although Councilman Squilla was not able to be there in person he was
certainly there in spirit. He was detained by a marathon City Council
session where he and his fellow council members did the good work for
all of us who care about Parks and Recreation. At issue it was the
Mayor’s initiative to used sweetened beverage tax money to pay for
significant renovation to Philadelphia Parks, Recreation Centers, and
libraries. Mayor Kenney has named the measure “Rebuild”.The measure
made it out of Committee last night and is expected to be approved by
Council shortly

Rebuild also includes significant agreements with the building
trades aimed at making the Rebuild funded projects use a labor force
that reflects the population that the facilities will serve. If well
executed this could lead to new apprentice programs and new jobs. Stay
tuned.

“Rebuild could touch from 150 to 200 individual sites, facilities that
have fallen into deep disrepair because of budget constraints.
Improvements will range from face-lifts to the construction of new
buildings.”
The Councilman called me after the event to apologize for his absence,
in light of what is being accomplished in City Hall, I say Apology
Accepted!
